The hidden GMOs in your diet

At the Los Angeles Fit Expo last weekend one of the hot topics for many people who came and talked to me was GMOs—genetically modified organisms, or the more recent expression GE (genetically engineered) crops.

People are understandably concerned or downright frightened about the safety of the food they’re buying, and want to know the “latest” in terms of GMO dangers and how to avoid them.

What makes this even more challenging is that the waters are getting increasingly muddy—major food manufacturers like Kellogg’s, Del Monte, General Mills, Nestlé’s and Campbell’s Soup are discretely funding efforts to defeat proposed legislation that would require stricter labeling identifying GMO ingredients.

And many are actually using GMO ingredients in their products as well.

So, my friend, you can be eating GMO foods by the boatload and not even know it.

Let’s take a look at the latest on GMO foods, what studies have been done regarding their safety, and how you can avoid them.

First the basics—what they are

Genetically modified organisms are created when the DNA of one organism is “inserted” or “spliced” into the DNA of another organism.

Nature has been doing something similar to this since the beginning of time—different variations of crops have been created when the wind or insects move pollen from one plant to another, many times creating a more hearty or nutritious species.

But with GMOs we’re not talking about plant to plant transfers of pollen.

Instead scientists are cutting off bits of a living organism’s DNA and splicing them into the DNA of a completely unrelated species.

For example, chicken genes have been inserted into potato DNA or fish genes into strawberry DNA

So for all of you who are allergic to seafood, think about that next time you eat strawberries.

In addition, rodent genes have been inserted into tobacco

Bacteria and viruses are being spliced into cucumbers and tomatoes.

And the big onechemical pesticides, fungicides and herbicides (especially Roundup) are being inserted into numerous crops.

Now, the way the idea of GMOs is being “sold” to the public is that they’re “necessary” to address our ever-skyrocketing demand for food—since these “Franken-crops” are supposedly better able to resist pests, droughts, disease and other crop-destroying forces and produce higher yields.

But, my friend, none of this has been shown to be true.

On the contrary, genetically altering plants actually increases disease susceptibility of the plants by impairing their immune response!

It also decreasesnot increases—crop yield.

According to Dr. Don Huber (an award-winning, internationally recognized scientist, and professor of plant pathology at Purdue University for the past 35 years), there has never been a genetically engineered plant that increases the intrinsic yield of a plant.

But that’s just the tip of the GMO iceberg.

Now let’s look at…

The safety record of GE crops

Regardless of what food companies, the media, Monsanto (the manufacturer of the herbicide Roundup) and various so-called “experts” claim, there are simply NO peer-reviewed scientific papers clearly establishing the safety of GMO crops.

There are, however, clinical and peer-reviewed scientific papers and other mountains of evidence showing their dangers.

GE foods, as well as conventional crops that are heavily sprayed with glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup), have lower nutrient density than organic foods.

They also contain high amounts of pesticides which have a long list of well-documented harmful health effects.

In addition, genetically altering crops creates “Franken-proteins” which are completely foreign to your body, and can put your immune system on alert, creating potential allergic reactions that simply cannot be predicted.

Epidemiological patterns show an increase in over 30 human diseases correlating with our increased usage of glyphosate and the increased prevalence of these genetically engineered proteins in our food.

In addition, glyphosate is a known chelator—meaning it pulls essential minerals out of your body.  It also immobilizes nutrients, so they’re not physiologically available for your body.

Plus glyphosate also happens to be patented as an antibiotic—and if you’ve been a reader of mine for even a short time you know what that means…

It destroys your beneficial gut flora which can weaken your immune system and lead to GI problems of all kinds!

GMO = Growing massively obese?

Yet another suspected danger of GMO crops has recently arisen.

Obesity!

That’s right.

As part of a project examining the health effects of GMOs, researchers from Norway studied 2 groups of rats.  One group was fed food containing GMO corn and the other was given food made with conventional corn.

Over the course of 90 days, the rats eating the GMO corn diet grew fatter and consumed more food than the rats on the non-GMO diet.

The researchers also observed that rats got fatter when they ate fish that had been raised on GMO corn–so there’s a chain reaction effect!

They also tried the experiment on salmon and saw similar results.

Fish eating GMO corn grew faster and ate more than fish eating non-GMO corn.

And the salmon eating the GMO corn were also less able to digest proteins, and experienced immune system changes that didn’t occur in the non-GMO-fed fish.

So the dangers I quoted up above regarding proteins and immune responses were shown in the fish!

How will I know?

Hopefully you’re wondering at this point how you can spot a GE food or GMO crop.

Well, food companies and Monsanto are doing their best to keep you in the dark, but there are some ways you can help keep these Franken-foods out of your life and help your body recover from any of the harmful effects that you may have already unknowingly encountered.

Here’s how–it just involves these 5 smart strategies:

1)  Become a careful label reader

There’s no need to panic and avoid buying produce and missing out on all its awesome health benefits.

All you need to do is when shopping for produce look closely at the little stickers on the items.  Here’s what they mean:

  • 4-digit code:  It’s your regular old traditionally grown      produce
  • 5-digit code:  Look at the first number.
    • If it starts with a 9,       it’s organic and safe.
    • If it starts with an 8,       it’s a GMO!

2) Avoid processed foods

GMO crops are also slipped into in packaged/processed foods, and the labels don’t need to spell that right out for you.

For example, many types of snack chips are made with GMO corn.

Sodas are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup made from GMO corn.

The general rule of thumb to ensure your safety is that if a food is processed and not organic, assume it is made with GMO ingredients.

Now if you wish to indulge in a snack or convenience food, make sure it’s organic (more on that in number 3 below).

3) Buy organic whenever you can

Organic foods by their very definition do not contain GMO ingredients

So if you want corn chips or other packaged foods, at least opt for organic brands.

And try to buy as much organic meat and produce as possible.

If you’re on a tight budget and can’t afford to go 100% organic, here are the items which have the largest amounts of pesticide residue and are most important to buy organic:

  • Celery
  • Peaches
  • Strawberries
  • Apples
  • Blueberries
  • Nectarines
  • Bell Peppers
  • Spinach
  • Cherries
  • Kale/Collard
  • Greens
  • Potatoes
  • Grapes (Imported)

An easy rule of thumb is if you’re going to be eating the entire food (skin and all) try to go organic.  If you’re going to be peeling or paring a thick skin on the food (such as with bananas, pineapple or avocado), traditionally grown is acceptable.

4) Eat real foods & have good digestion

When you eat real foods and have efficient digestion, you are significantly minimizing your chances of taking in GMOs, and you also help nourish your body the way Nature–NOT the biotech industry–intended.

5) Help restore a proper flora balance

If you’ve been unknowingly eating Roundup in your foods or have knowingly taken antibiotics, chances are excellent your friendly intestinal flora balance is not what it should be.

In order to maximize your chances of having a proper flora balance (as well as a strong immune system and regular bowel movements), it’s wise to supplement with a probiotic formula that contains both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species.

It’s all up to you

Remember YOU alone are responsible for your health–not biotech companies and food companies

Do all you can to stay FAR away from GMO crops and GE foods.

Remember food companies and herbicide manufacturers care only about their bottom lines—your health be damned.

When it comes to real health, Natural is ALWAYS best, my friend.

The newest health dangers of gluten

January 12, 2014 by

I was at a holiday dinner party last Saturday night where I met a lot of very nice, interesting new people.

We chatted about things like our families, Syracuse University basketball, the snowy winter we’ve had so far and our careers.

And when people find out that my career is in the nutrition field that usually means these two things:

  1. 1.       People start hiding their plates from me so I won’t “judge” what they’re eating and
  2. 2.       I get peppered with diet questions!

One woman said that her daughter had recently gone gluten free and she didn’t really understand why or what it was all about, and asked me what I knew about gluten.

Well, once I got talking many of the other guests joined our little circle to listen as well.

Here is what I told them:

So why is gluten causing so many problems now?

The answer is simple:  Gluten problems have skyrocketed over the last decade or two because the AMOUNT of gluten we’re eating (as compared to 50 years ago) has also skyrocketed

And our bodies are simply not biologically designed to handle that much gluten!

Thanks to bioengineering of crops, the wheat harvested today has nearly double the gluten of the wheat that our grandparents ate.

Plus practically ALL processed foods contain gluten as a thickener, and our consumption of those foods has exploded over the last 50 years.

So, my friend, it should be no surprise at all that many of us are getting sick from too much gluten.

How can you tell if gluten is harming you?

Well, most people do know gluten on a very personal basis, but they just don’t realize it.  That’s because gluten-related health problems disguise themselves as many other diseases with different names.

The New England Journal of Medicine listed 55 “diseases” that can be caused or worsened by eating gluten.  These include osteoporosis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), anemia, cancer, fatigue, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and almost all other autoimmune diseases.

Heard of any of those?

Gluten is also linked to many psychiatric and neurological diseases, including anxiety, depression, migraines, epilepsy and neuropathy (nerve damage).

Plus of course, it has also been linked to autism.

The previous stereotype for someone with gluten problems or celiac disease used to be children who had diarrhea, were dangerously thin, and failed to thrive.

Now it’s been shown you can be young or old, thin or overweight, and have diarrhea or constipation and still have a gluten problem.

And by failing to diagnose gluten sensitivity or celiac disease that means pain, suffering, needless medication and possibly early death for millions of people…because gluten’s dangers are continuing to grow.

Higher death risk from heart disease & cancer

The problems associated with gluten are growing, and that’s resulted in some pretty interesting studies being done.

For example, a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that people with celiac and gluten sensitivity had a higher risk of death, mostly from heart disease and cancer.

This study examined 30,000 patients from 1969 to 2008 and their cause of death in three groups:  Those with celiac disease, those with gluten-induced intestinal inflammation (but not celiac) and those with gluten sensitivity.

The findings were alarming.  There was a 39 percent increased risk of death in those with celiac disease, 72 percent increased risk in those with gluten-related gut inflammation and 35 percent increased risk in those with gluten sensitivity!

5 times more people have celiac

Another study was conducted that compared the blood of 10,000 people from 50 years ago to 10,000 people today

The results were shocking–the rate of celiac disease increased by 400 percent (in other words, 5 times as many people have it now as compared to before)!

If we saw a 400 percent increase in cancer or heart disease, you can bet the world would know about it.  But the average person hears next to nothing about gluten problems, despite the fact that they’re skyrocketing.

What to do

So if you suspect you may be gluten sensitive, how can you find out for sure, and more importantly, what can you do about it?

And what if you’re not gluten sensitive but still want to avoid gluten?

Glad you asked.  Here are three very helpful measures you can take to minimize gluten’s effect on you and help restore and maintain your strong state of health:

1) Get it out of your diet

First and foremost, it can make a tremendous difference to remove gluten from your diet.

(The tests for gluten sensitivity and Celiac are different, so if your doctor has only done one test, you have not been completely tested and may still be needlessly suffering from gluten.)

Plus you’ll be armed with all the facts you’ll need when deciding to live a gluten free lifestyle, including shopping lists, substitution guides and hints for creating a gluten free household.

And of course the recipe book is chock full of 160 of the most mouth-watering, delectable gluten free recipes.  Wait until you taste the breads, cookies and cakes–you’ll swear they’re fresh from your favorite bakery!

2) Restore your flora balance

Gluten sensitivity and the resulting effects on your intestinal tract can also upset your flora balance, giving harmful bacteria the “upper hand.”

Not only does this mean a weakened immune system, but since your flora help digest certain foods, it can mean even MORE gut misery!

And that means you can start feeling much better…fast.

3)  Enzymes if necessary

Because our bodies were not meant to handle the onslaught of gluten that they are now faced with, and because gluten is so difficult for your body to break down, you can expend a LOT of digestive enzymes in the process.

And if that continues over time, your enzyme making ability can become greatly diminished…and that means increasing digestive problems and poor nutrient absorption.

That’s when a digestive enzyme supplement like can be a huge help.

Complete digestion helps your wastes move through the intestinal tract easier…and you can have fewer gut aches as a result!

The health issues caused by gluten continue to grow, and it’s not something you can be in the dark about any longer.

If you know or suspect gluten is a culprit behind your health issues, see how much better you can feel when you take the necessary measures to eliminate it from your life and help your body bounce back to a strong state of health!

Avoid these 6 deadly nutrition lie

January 12, 2014 by

As much as I would love to say otherwise, our current state of health in the US is downright alarming.

If you doubt what I’m saying, consider these grim statistics:

  • 2 out of 3 of us are overweight or obese
  • 7 out of 10 people regularly take at least one prescription medication
  • More than half of us take two prescription medications, and 20% (1 out of 5) of Americans are on at least FIVE prescription medications
  • Chronic inflammatory disease rates continue to go through the roof, and these conditions are now affecting young and old alike—we’re not talking just “old age arthritis” anymore

Why would that be?

After all, there have been tremendous advances in diagnostic tests and surgeries, and of course a plethora of drugs being researched and developed every single day.

So why are we so darn sickly?

Well, my friend, it’s because our current healthcare system focuses on anything BUT health.

Its focus is on the treatment of sickness and disease once they occur—so “healthcare” should really be called “sick care.”

And until that focus changes to sickness and disease prevention and the creation of true health, you can bet those statistics I quoted above are going to get worse and worse.

Now, when you’re talking about encouraging great health and preventing disease, there are a lot of factors that come into play—quitting smoking, not drinking alcohol to excess, getting regular exercise and reducing stress—but far and away, the number one factor is FOOD.

Nothing dictates whether you will be fat or thin, medicated or not, or healthy or diseased more than your diet.

What complicates this situation even more is that the average person is inundated with volumes of worthless dietary advice coming at them in all directions…to the point where they don’t know what to believe!

And it makes a big difference depending on who’s doing the talking too.

You see, when you’re being given “healthy” diet advice by a source that is either completely ignorant to the principles of proper nutrition, or is somehow tied to a food company or pharmaceutical company, you can bet the advice will be appropriately slanted.

Heaven help you at that point.

But today is your lucky day.

Because I’m going to clue you in on six examples of “healthy diet advice” that are not only completely wrong, but are downright harmful and are major contributors to our fat, sick, medicated existence.

Then I will give you straightforward advice on how to help create real health from within that you can take to the bank!

First let’s start with what NOT to believe—otherwise known as:

The Six Deadly Nutrition Lies

1. Saturated fats harm your heart

Saturated fats are needed by your body to protect your nerve cells, produce hormones, keep your cell membranes healthy, help your body assimilate the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and help your brain and nervous system with transmitting nerve impulses.

And get this–the fat that surrounds your heart and that your heart draws upon in times of stress is…

Saturated fat!

The truth is the average person needs about 30% of their daily calories to come from fats, and about one-third of those should be saturated fats.

Good sources of saturated fats include fats from animal sources (meat, butter, lard, suet, milk, eggs and cheese)–preferably organic, as well as avocados.

2. All sugars are created equal and are OK in moderation

This is the ploy that food companies use to justify using the legalized poison called high fructose corn syrup in their products.

Here’s the fact:  Fructose and glucose are NOT metabolized by your body in the same way.

Every cell in your body utilizes glucose, so much of what you take in can be burned up (if you’re active enough).

But fructose, on the other hand, is turned into free fatty acids (FFAs) and triglycerides which get stored as FAT.

When you eat 120 calories of glucose, less than one calorie is stored as fat. But 120 calories of fructose results in 40 calories being stored as fat!

Plus your liver must metabolize fructose, which puts a tremendous strain on it and creates waste products such as uric acid, which drives up blood pressure and causes gout.

3. Cholesterol clogs arteries

Cholesterol is a health-enhancing substance that your body NEEDS to stay healthy.

It’s a potent antioxidant, it’s needed by your liver to make bile and it helps protect you against depression.

Plus it repairs tears in your blood vessels, it’s vital for your brain and nervous system to function properly and it helps your body manufacture Vitamin D.

The real culprit behind clogged arteries is chronic inflammation in your blood vessels (which is a direct result of an acid-forming diet, eating too many Omega-6 fatty acids and consumption of trans-fats) and wastes and toxins in your blood.

4. You should use polyunsaturated oils and margarine

This is actually an extension of #1 above.

Since saturated fats are falsely implicated in heart disease, of course this gives food companies an excellent opportunity to market “heart healthy” oils and margarine.

What the average person doesn’t realize is that when you use these products, you’re getting loaded with trans-fats!

You see, whenever a polyunsaturated oil is heated, trans-fats are created.

So when you use vegetable oils like safflower, sunflower, soybean, corn or canola oil in cooking, the moment you dump it in the frying pan and heat it up, voila, you have created artery-clogging trans-fats.

And margarine is the really sneaky one here because so many are marketed as “trans-fat free!”

But margarine is made with polyunsaturated oils, and during the manufacturing process, the oils are always heated.

So margarine is loaded with trans-fats, regardless of what the label says.

5. Sugar-free foods are good for dieting

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen a very overweight or obese person drinking Diet Pepsi.

See anything wrong with that picture?

The fact is, the sweetening substances that are used in sugar-free foods–like Splenda (sucralose) and Equal or NutraSweet (aspartame)–may have zero calories, but your body isn’t fooled.

When it gets a tease of a “sweet” taste, it expects calories to follow.

And when this doesn’t occur that leads to distortions in your biochemistry that actually lead to weight GAIN as well as increase your cravings for sweets.

6. “My Plate” is good diet advice

Give me a break

“My Plate” is the re-creation of the 1992 Food Pyramid, which instructed people to eat 6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice and pasta each day.

This flood of refined carbohydrates is the exact OPPOSITE of what most people need to stay healthy!  They turn to nothing but sugar in your body, pack on the pounds, create a harmful flora imbalance in your gut and put out the welcome mat for Type 2 diabetes to come calling.

My Plate has downplayed grains as the most important dietary group and made vegetables the largest “plate section,” but it still strongly pushes grains and lacks any plausible advice on healthy fat consumption.

Let’s put it this way–if the “Food Pyramid” and now “My Plate” was good advice, why are two-thirds of us fat or obese?

Real straightforward diet advice

Now that you know the truth behind the Six Deadly Nutrition Lies, let me give you some REAL diet advice.

If you really want to help prevent disease, achieve and maintain a healthy bodyweight, and quite possibly lead a medication-free existence, here are 3 effective strategies that can help you enhance YOUR health from head to toe:

1- Eat real (not processed) foods & encourage good digestion

Having a diet of real (not processed) foods is the single biggest bang for your buck when it comes to great health.

First of all, when your diet is comprised mainly of real foods, the trans-fats found in processed foods become a non-issue for you.

Secondly, you’ll be getting good sources of crucial antioxidants to help fight any existing health-destroying free radicals you may have cruising around.

You’ll also get natural sources of crucial nutrients which can help prevent disease and deficiencies, as well as strengthen your precious immune system!

And when you have a healthy diet and good digestion, this helps minimize waste accumulation in your blood, which cuts off a major source of inflammation!

 2- Balance your intestinal flora

The friendly flora in your gut helps your body digest certain foods and fibers and keeps your gut wall healthy–both of which are essential for proper nutrient absorption and feelings of satiety.

Plus they make up about 70% of your immune system to boot!

Problem is, people who have had a typical diet of fast food, boxed creations, soda and lots of sugary refined carbs have fed the harmful bacteria in their guts while the good guys starve…and are likely looking at a serious imbalance as a result.

And even if you’ve had a fairly decent diet, other factors like medication use (especially antacids and antibiotics), stress and lack of sleep can make your gut flora topsy-turvy

In addition to eating nourishing foods that feed your friendly flora, the best way to restore a proper flora balance is with probiotic supplementation.

3- Get enough of Nature’s anti-inflammatory–Omega-3 EFAs

Omega-3 essential fatty acids have shown to be an important tool to help enhance health in these 4 ways:

  1. They’ve been medically PROVEN to help lower blood pressure. Studies show that daily fish oil supplementation alone can lower your systolic (the top number) pressure by five points or more and your diastolic (the bottom number) pressure by three points or more!
  2. Omega-3 EFAs have anti-inflammatory properties, which may help counteract any inflammation you might have building up in your arteries and joints.
  3. They also help keep clots from forming by reducing the stickiness in your platelets and curbing the production of the fibrinogens which are part of clogged arteries.
  4. Your brain’s neurons (the cells that transmit messages) are extremely rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, especially Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).  Problem is, our food supply doesn’t contain a fraction of the Omega-3 EFAs that it used to (thanks to our heavy reliance on processed foods, vegetable oils and grain-fed animals).

Now you are armed with the information you need to make REAL health-enhancing nutrition decisions.

And the next time you come face to face with one of the Six Deadly Nutrition Lies, you’ll know the truth.

Your body will be very grateful.

Hidden dangers of belly fat

January 9, 2014 by

I don’t think I’ll be shocking you out of your chair today if I say that most people associate apples with good health.

After all they’re loaded with fiber, vitamins and minerals, low in calories and have even earned the reputation of “keeping the doctor away.”

That is, unless you’re talking about having an apple body shape.  That’s a completely different story.

Having a concentration of fat around your middle (also known by the nicknames “spare tire” or “muffin top”) can spell many a hazard that goes far beyond needing to buy “plus” sizes or having to lie on the bed just to zip your jeans.

Let’s take a closer look at the apple figure…including a couple serious new health dangers associated with this body type.

It’s all in your triglycerides

Fat accumulation anywhere on your body is a perfect illustration of your triglycerides in action.

Now, most people are pretty familiar with cholesterol, but kind of scratch their heads when asked about triglycerides.

Simply put, triglycerides are your body’s main type of fat. They’re the primary form in which your body stores energy for future use.

They also insulate and protect your internal organs and store your body’s reserves of essential fatty acids.

So, similar to cholesterol, triglycerides are NOT necessarily the demons that people think they are.

The trouble with triglycerides arises when you have WAY too many…and begin to resemble a Macintosh.

High triglycerides + an apple figure = increased heart disease risk

Having high blood levels of triglycerides in and of itself increases your risk of heart disease by damaging your artery walls.

The danger is like what happens when you don’t regularly change the oil in your car.

When neglected, both human blood and engine oil get thick, which makes the heart (or engine) have to work harder to pump the fluid (blood or oil). The fluid also picks up excess debris and forms harmful deposits, which eventually cause a breakdown.

A car engine will burn up.  In humans, the result is a heart attack or a stroke.

And having an apple figure seriously multiplies your risk!

You see, if you’re an apple, you’re also very likely to have metabolic syndrome symptoms, including high blood pressure, insulin resistance and high blood lipids. In other words, you’re at much greater risk of diabetes and heart disease.

For men with diabetes AND the apple figure, the risk for heart disease goes up two and a half times. For women with diabetes and this shape, it rises EIGHT times!

Here’s why that happens:

Fat cells located in your abdomen release fat into the blood more easily than fat cells found elsewhere in your body. Release of fat in the middle begins just 3 to 4 hours after you eat, compared to many more hours for other fat cells.

This quick, easy release shows up as elevated triglyceride levels in your bloodstream—and you get the artery damage and “thickened” blood like I described above.

But wait—there’s more!

Unfortunately the health dangers of having an apple shape don’t stop with an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Your kidneys are on the radar too.

Researchers in the Netherlands have found that having an apple figure can significantly raise your risk of kidney disease–even if your “apple” is on the small side and you’re not grossly overweight!

While a connection between obesity and kidney disease has long been proven, this recent study (published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology) is the first to show how even a small increase in belly fat begins to strain your kidneys, reducing the blood flow to them and raising the local blood pressure within them.

Since your kidneys are responsible for filtering dangerous toxins out of your bloodstream and eliminating them through your urine, when they’re under stress you become increasingly toxic…and this makes you the perfect home for disease to flourish.

And even MORE!

People with extra abdominal fat are also three times more likely than slim individuals to develop memory loss and dementia later in life.

Here’s why, according to a recent study published in the journal Cell Reports:

The liver and the memory center of your brain (known as the hippocampus) share a need for a certain protein called PPARalpha. Your liver uses PPARalpha to burn belly fat and the hippocampus uses PPARalpha to process memory.

Well, if you’re an apple shape with a lot of belly fat, your liver needs to work overtime trying to metabolize all that fat, and in doing so, it hogs your body’s supplies of PPARalpha—starting by first depleting nearby stores of it and then eventually raiding the rest of your body including your brain.

Eventually your hippocampus ends up starving for PPARalpha, and this can hamper your memory and learning.

Shrink your “Granny Smith” and reduce your risk!

Hopefully you’ve gotten the idea by now that having elevated blood triglyceride levels and an apple figure isn’t the best idea in the world.

It can cost you your memory, your kidneys or even your life!

The good news is, you can help turn this process around and get on a track to better health.

Step one is to be aware of the “formula” that causes elevated triglycerides and an apple figure to begin with:

  1. Eating too many refined carbohydrates such as white flour, processed grains, sweets, and other sugar-containing foods, plus
  2. Eating too many saturated fats, especially trans-fats, plus
  3. Having too few antioxidants in your system

How you can turn it around

The best way to help beat high triglycerides and resemble a humannot a fruit–is using this two-part approach:

Part 1- Limit your intake of refined carbs and saturated fats, avoid trans-fats at ALL cost, and eat more foods that contain natural antioxidants.

Part 2- Supplement with Omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids can safely lower blood triglyceride levels by up to 65%!

Studies have shown that people who maintain a rich supply of Omega-3 EFAs remain free of cardiovascular disease and other degenerative conditions far longer than those with lower Omega-3 levels.

That translates into feeling GREAT well into your golden years.

Plus Omega-3 EFAs are absolutely crucial for proper brain functioning—which was another concern above associated with an apple figure

OK, all you apples out there—it’s time to do something NOW about that belly fat of yours.

Believe me, your body will return the favor many times over…plus it just might save your life.

And that’s quite a holiday gift, isn’t it?

To your health,

Sherry Brescia

14-year-old teen GMO activist

Her name is Rachel Parent, and she’s suddenly an internet sensation for her cool-headed debate about GMOs on a popular Canadian TV show. (She’s also the founder of the Kids Right to Know GMO Walk.) As you’ll see in the video below, Rachel calmly argues for the basic human right to know what’s in our food, even as the condescending bully of a host named Kevin O’Leary verbally assaults the girl and practically accuses her of murdering children.

During the debate, Kevin O’Leary, co-host of the The Lang And O’Leary Exchange show, viciously attacked Rachel, first accusing her of being a “lobbyist” against GMOs (an absurd accusation that O’Leary knows is false, as there is no corporate interest in honest food labeling), and then equating her position of questioning GMOs with somehow supporting a holocaust of widespread death of children. Despite the outrageous attacks, Rachel Parent simply countered his utterly contrived accusations with the facts: GMO crops don’t out-produce regular crops, GMOs are a dangerous global experiment using human beings as lab rats, and consumers should have the right to know what they’re buying or eating.

Genetically modified foods, such as Monsanto’s Roundup Ready corn and soy, may have a negative effect on human digestive systems, particularly the intestinal bacterial balance, leading to allergies and a number of diseases, says a recent article published by the Alliance for Natural Health.

With zero human clinical trials conducted, there’s no conclusive evidence as to what long-term effects diets high in GMO foods will have, but scientists working with hamsters, rats and livestock who have ingested GMO corn and soy have found the subjects experienced an abnormal number of birth defects, incidences of sterility, higher infant mortality rates and bizarre mutant traits such as hair growing on the inside of the mouths of hamsters.

Because the (de)nature of genetically engineered foods is by definition myriad mutations all through the DNA sequence of the plants, scientists say these changes are not static, but dynamic, meaning they can change even while inside our bodies, rearranging our own physiology, causing damage long after we’ve passed the food from our system.

According to ANH, human DNA is already somewhat parasitic, with a portion of it originating from viral sources tens of millions of years ago, making the threat of GMO, even more confounding—what type of mutations can GMOs have on human DNA?

With the increasingly speedy deregulation of a number of genetically modified seeds from alfalfa to Kentucky bluegrass, the concerns for human health are also rapidly increasing as a number of recent studies link GMOs to human organ damage and birth defects.

Avoid GMOs

There are many reasons to avoid GMOs—and among them is the shocking new study released on September 19, 2012, that says long-term eating of genetically modified (GM) corn and its weed killer leads to tumors, damaged kidneys and livers, and early death in rats.

Add that to the fact that in the only feeding study done on humans, it showed that GMOs survive inside the stomach of people who eat genetically modified (GM) food. That may not shock you, but the implications of it may. The transfer of the GM transgenes to gut bacteria may create long-term exposure to GMOs, since the foreign protein may continue to be produced inside of us.

Additionally, past studies in animals ingesting GMOs indicate potentially pre-cancerous cell growth; damage to immune systems and virtually every organ studied in lab animals; smaller brains, livers, and testicles; partial shrinking or increased density of the liver; unusually shaped cell nuclei and other anomalies as well as false pregnancies and increased death rates.

Those are among the various reasons why the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) says that “GM foods pose a serious health risk.” They’ve called for a moratorium on GM food as well as long-term testing and labeling of GM food so that people will be aware of GM food dangers.

Truth be told, GMOs and GM foods pose dozens of health risks. Just ask foremost authority on GMOs, Jeffrey Smith, Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology, who, in his comprehensive book, Genetic Roulette: The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods, says there are at least 65 health risks associated with GMOs.

Among those are broadly categorized areas he discusses, such as the transfer of genes to gut bacteria—mentioned earlier—internal organs or viruses, that GM crops may increase environmental toxins and bioaccumulate toxins in the food chain, and that gene insertion disrupts DNA and can create unpredictable health problems. What’s more is that the health risks from GMOs are even greater for newborns and children.

Smith says, “World renowned biologist Pushpa M. Bhargava says that after reviewing more than 600 scientific journals, he concludes that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a major contributor to the sharply deteriorating health of Americans.”

Additionally, Smith cites that the genes inserted into GM soy, for instance, can transfer into the bacteria living inside us, and that the toxic insecticide by GM corn was found in the blood of pregnant women and their unborn children. Likewise, GMOs have lasting contamination power as well as require increased herbicide use to grow due to their design and resulting “superweeds,” while also harming the environment. GMOs also don’t increase yields. Neither do they offer a solution for feeding a hungry world—while organic farming does.

By avoiding GMOs, you can actively force them out of our food supply.

In the meantime, avoid GMOs at all costs.
